Pork 4

Posted by Maindrian Dec. 5, 2007 @ 9:12 PM EST

So, Pork. Pork Porky Pork Pork. My little bit of youtube fun. Basically, this is how I waste time.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XSExgUhw fzg

Idiocy isn't it? A grown man, dubbing crappy films and doing rudimentry animation that tries for Gilliam-esque, but isn't half as clever. I'd do flash, god knows I've tried, but I just haven't the time or patience to fully understand it, although I am a fan, which is why I'm here and hopefully you appreciate my musical input instead.

So yeah, Pork 4. When it's done, that'll probably be it. But TO THE POINT.

I composed pretty much all the music for Pork 3 and onwards, save for a few little cues and hits. Had fun doing it, my first babysteps into proper scoring. Sort of. Comedy diddles that are quaint and silly. A lot of the music is here among my music collection, for others to have fun with and use as they see fit, that's cool. Quite pleased to see stuff like "Bouncing Annoying Thing" turn up in "Ascii-Man" for instance. That one was written for Pork 4.

Anyway, as a little bit of fun, alongside Pork 4, I am also working on a "Pork Suite", encompassing every single theme I can cram in. Yes, I know, it's a stupid idea and that's precisely the point. So, it'll take in small delights like the main theme, "Here Comes Chevy Chase", "Warble For Me Willie" and the all new "Theme of John Major" all freshly composed and done in differing styles, going for as epic a length as I can manage. Again, an absurd idea, but that's the whole point.

If you're doing something truly stupid, why not make it EPIC stupid, eh?

Art Vs. Entertainment

Posted by Maindrian Oct. 30, 2007 @ 8:50 PM EDT

I dunno, saw something earlier today that really, really, really annoyed me.

Rifling through Awfulvision at Something Awful, and there's this page full of tons of bad covers of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana (IT CAN'T BE DONE). Now, my standing on that is a moot point entirely. I'll admit, I've been in bands and tried to cover that song, and yes, it too sounded like shite. Never mind, I digress.

This band, Flyleaf is shown. Before they start, the lead singer goes into a stumbling, nonsensical spiel about why they're covering the song. "Some people will think this sucks, but as entertainers..." Trips over her words, giggles, carries on. "... As artists, we don't want to entertain. We want to offend and inspire."

Oh dear.

Surely the whole point of being musicians is entertainment? Sure, you can create art as you go, you can offend and inspire, just look at The Beatles, but if it isn't entertaining, what on earth is the point? The whole statement reeks of attitude as a front. A display if you will, to prove that YES, they are ARTISTS, YES, they are REBELLIOUS AND COOL.

Incidentally, the performance wouldn't have been that bad if it wasn't for the singer, who couldn't carry the song at all. Her voice wailed and whined and had all the power of a flea farting into the wind. Kurt ROARED that bastard out in a way which hasn't been equalled since and probably never will.

Hey, who am I to talk, I'm not exactly Mr. Wonder Voice.

Regardless, a stupid statement. Basically, what the young lady was saying was, "We're no fun at all, in fact, we're pretty rubbish. But we're like this because it's ART." No. Art, evokes emotions. Bland, soulless, poorly executed rock does not.
